THE UNLIKELY FRIENDSHIP BETWEEN A 5 YEAR OLD GIRL & A HOLLYWOOD STUNTMAN CREATES A DAZZLING WORLD OF MAGIC & MYTH - CHANGING BOTH THEIR LIVES FOREVER.

Roger Ebert proclaimed it "one of the most extraordinary films I've ever seen," and there's no denying the avalanche of wild images in The Fall: grand castles, desert vistas, elephants swimming in the open ocean. Commercial and music-video director Tarsem has piled these visions into an elaborate remake of an obscure Bulgarian film, Yo Ho Ho, which is anchored in (but by no means limited to) a quiet hospital during the silent-movie era. A stuntman (Lee Pace) is laid up with leg injuries, and an eye-popping black-and-white prologue (utterly mystifying while we're watching it) tells us how he got here. Depressed over his disability and a recent lost love, he plans suicide, but is temporarily derailed by the inquisitive friendship of a little girl (Catinca Untaru), to whom he tells wild stories of adventurers and princesses. We see these stories, which is where the dizzying visuals come in. This movie probably won't inspire many lukewarm responses: either you'll fall madly for this paean to storytelling magic, or you'll be suspicious about the parade of pretty pictures, which tend to have a magazine-layout sheen. The movie certainly has more soul than Tarsem's yucky previous feature, The Cell, and the scenes between Pace and Untaru (who scores an 11 on the cuteness scale) are genuinely charming. The director actually put a considerable amount of his own money into the production (which shot in over 20 countries), and whether you buy his vision or not, he put his money on the screen. --Robert Horton

A magical fall! (2009-06-26)
This movie is a magnificent depiction of a special bond between two friends. "The Fall" is the story of two different people, who meet in a hospital and develop a special friendship filled with numerous complex emotions.
Who saved the other's soul? Or did the friendship save both friends? Watch and see! This film delivers a journey of incomparable intensity. I would watch it ad infinitum.

WOW! (2009-06-16)
When I first saw the previews on tv, I said I have to watch it when it comes out in theater. Somehow, I completely missed it, even when it came out on DVD/BD. I waited and waited for the price to go down but it never did. Finally broke down and bought it. And wow! Never saw such breathtaking cinematography. Beautiful! Beautiful! Don't know why this movie was so under the radar.

Great chemistry between Lee Pace and the little girl who btw is so adorable you want to eat her up.

Great story, great acting, beautiful scenes, best money I've spent for a BD.

Beautiful and original (2009-06-10)
The Bottom Line:

A movie unlike any you've seen, with several of its most fascinating shots alone being worth the price of admission--no CGI was used in the film--and with a fascinating story to boot, The Fall was easily one of the best movies of 2008, even if the Academy thought otherwise; it's not a perfect film, but its memory and images will linger in your mind far longer than scenes from The Reader or Milk will.

3.5/4

Under-rated (2009-05-27)
This is probably the most underrated movie i have ever seen. I walked into a video store one weekend and couldn't find a movie to watch so the person working the counter suggested 'The Fall'. I was a bit skeptical, but this movie blew me away! I'd suggest it to anyone who enjoys breathtaking cinematography along with stunning locales. Easily my favorite movie.

astonishing (2009-05-07)
The visual splendor alone captivated me, but the outstanding performances by the two leads, and a mind-bending/heart-wrenching story added together easily launched this movie into my top 10 all time favorites. Some have sought to classify this movie as a fantasy, but that's not quite accurate. It is a fantastical story with brilliant imagery, closer to allegory with its story-within-a story approach. And in reality it is a story of loss and sadness, of trying to adjust, and of a struggle for hope that leads to redemption. Multi-layered yet simple, and blessed with a beautiful musical score on top of everything else, this is a movie that demands to be viewed over and over again, rendering more and more of its treasures with each viewing.

An advisory note: the movie is rated R by the MPAA; it has several brief but graphic moments of violence, and involves intense emotional scenes of a mature nature. It may not be appropriate for pre-teens.
